We hear it all the time: “Pawn shops rip you off! Sell it on Facebook/OfferUp!”

But is that actually true? And more importantly, is it worth the hassle?

We decided to run a live test. We acquired two identical Nintendo Switch OLED consoles (White Joy-Cons, complete in box).

  • Console A: Went to a local pawn shop in Chicago.
  • Console B: Listed on OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace.

Here are the results.

The Profit Gap: $50

Yes, selling it ourselves netted $50 more. That is undeniable math. If maximizing every dollar is your only goal, private sale wins every time.

But let’s look at the hidden costs.

The OfferUp Experience (Console B)

Day 1 (Saturday):

  • 10:00 AM: Took photos, wrote description, listed for $240.
  • 10:15 AM: First message! “Will you take $100?” (Ignored).
  • 2:00 PM: “Is this available?” x 4. I replied “Yes.” No response.
  • 6:00 PM: Serious buyer. Offers $220. We agree to meet at a Starbucks the next day.

Day 2 (Sunday):

  • 11:00 AM: I drive to Starbucks. Wait 15 minutes.
  • 11:15 AM: Message buyer. “Oh sorry man, bought one yesterday.”
  • Rage Factor: 8/10. Wasted 45 minutes and gas.

Day 3 (Monday):

  • 9:00 AM: New buyer. Offers $210 cash. Can meet NOW.
  • 10:00 AM: Met at Police Station (safe exchange zone).
  • 10:05 AM: He inspects it carefully. Tries to negotiate down to $200 because of a “smudge.” I stand firm.
  • 10:10 AM: Sold for $210.

Total Cash: $210. Hourly Wage: I spent roughly 3 hours actively messaging, driving, and waiting. That $50 profit came at a “wage” of about $16/hour.

The Pawn Shop Experience (Console A)

Day 1 (Monday):

  • 10:00 AM: Drove to “Windy City Pawn.”
  • 10:15 AM: Walked in. No line.
  • 10:20 AM: Broker tests the Switch. Checks the joy-cons for drift. Checks the game slot.
  • 10:25 AM: “I can do $150 loan or $160 buy.”
  • 10:26 AM: I chose Sell ($160).
  • 10:30 AM: ID scanned, cash in hand. Walked out.

Total Cash: $160. Hourly Wage: Even including the drive, I spent 45 minutes total. I got immediate liquidity.

The Verdict: What is your time worth?

This experiment changed how we view the “rip-off” narrative.

The pawn shop isn’t stealing that $50. They are charging you a service fee for:

  1. Immediacy: You get cash in 10 minutes.
  2. Convenience: You don’t have to deal with flakers, scammers, or stranger danger.
  3. Risk: They might sit on that Switch for 30 days before selling it for $240.

Our Recommendation:

  • Use Apps IF: You have patience, live in a dense area (easy meetups), and need every dollar.
  • Use Pawn Shops IF: You value your time more than $16/hour, you need cash today, or you simply hate dealing with strangers on the internet.

A Note on Safety

The biggest hidden factor was safety. Meeting a stranger from the internet always carries a non-zero risk. The pawn shop felt like a regular retail transaction—cameras, security, professional staff. For many, that peace of mind is worth the $50 “fee” alone.

How We Calculate Pawn Values

Our price ranges are derived from publicly available data sources, including advertised pawn shop quotes, completed marketplace transactions, and community-reported offers. We apply consistent data processing methods:

  • Deduplication and standardization of model names, storage tiers, and condition grades
  • Outlier handling using winsorization or Tukey IQR methods
  • Aggregation into condition buckets (A/B/C) with 20–80 percentile bands

Each guide includes a Batch ID and links to a downloadable sample CSV for transparency. For complete details on our methodology, data sources, and refresh cadence, see our full Methodology page .

FAQ

Which is better for me?

If you need rent money *today*, pawn it. If you can wait 3 days and handle 15 messages, sell it yourself.
